Remember Me As…..

Posted in homily by frvictorray on April 1, 2021

When asked, “How do you want to be remembered?” Kobe Bryant said, “I want to be remembered as a player who didn’t waste a moment: didn’t waste a day. I felt blessed with God-given talent; I never took it for granted.”

One of the privileges I have as a priest is to be invited into the final days of someone’s life. At that point, most people drop all the pretense and live authentically. They focus on telling stories and sharing memories that say, “this is who I really am; this is how I want to remember me.”

On this evening, Jesus had one last chance to say to his disciples, “This is who I really am; this is how I want you to remember me.” A teacher true to his word, Jesus made himself vulnerable and approachable. As the disciples shared their last meal with Jesus, their minds were flooded with memories of the sick being healed, the weak gaining strength, outcasts being welcomed, the dying knowing peace, and sinners being given a fresh start.

When you die, how do you want to be remembered? You’re creating those memories right now. So focus on living a meaningful life so people will talk kindly of you long after you’re gone. Jesus says, “Do you realize what I have done for you?” John 13:12.

Todays practice: Complete this phrase: Remember me as……Wonder what your answers might be. Blessed Holy Week.
